Background of the Study
This appraisal examines the critical role of women in the informal economies of Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo State. Women in informal sectors contribute significantly to local economies yet often work under conditions that are undervalued and unregulated (Smith, 2023). Their participation ranges from small-scale trading to home-based production, which remains largely unrecognized in formal economic statistics (Johnson, 2024). The informal economy, characterized by flexibility and resilience, is crucial in supporting household incomes and community welfare. However, systemic barriers such as limited access to finance, social stigma, and inadequate policy support hinder the full potential of women entrepreneurs (Brown, 2025). The study explores the dynamics of informal economic activities and assesses the impact of these factors on women’s economic empowerment. By drawing on local surveys and interviews, the research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the contributions and challenges of women in the informal sector, offering recommendations to improve policy frameworks (Ade, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Women in Egbeda’s informal economy face significant challenges, including lack of formal recognition, limited financial access, and social biases. These obstacles hinder their economic empowerment and perpetuate gender disparities in income generation. Despite their substantial contribution to the local economy, their work is often marginalized in policy discussions. This study seeks to uncover the systemic issues that restrict women’s full economic potential and to propose practical interventions for better integration into the formal economic planning process (Johnson, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the economic contributions of women in the informal sector.
To identify barriers that hinder their full participation.
To propose policy recommendations for enhancing economic empowerment.
Research Questions:
What are the key contributions of women in the informal economy?
What barriers limit their economic potential?
What interventions can improve their access to resources?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Women’s contributions to the informal economy are undervalued.
H₂: Socioeconomic barriers significantly restrict women’s economic participation.
H₃: Policy interventions can enhance women’s economic empowerment.
Significance of the Study
This appraisal highlights the indispensable role of women in Egbeda’s informal economy, urging policymakers to recognize and support their contributions. The study’s insights aim to foster more inclusive economic policies that promote gender equality and sustainable community development (Brown, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on women engaged in the informal economy in Egbeda Local Government Area. Limitations include challenges in data collection due to the unstructured nature of informal economic activities and potential bias in self-reported data.
Definitions of Terms:
Informal Economy: Economic activities that are not regulated by formal institutions.
Economic Empowerment: Enhancing the capacity of individuals to participate in economic activities and access resources.
